Dell announced that it has updated its commercial line of Dell OptiPlex desktops with new small form factor PCs

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Integrating the GPU with the CPU is already being done at companies that partner with ARM, whose processors form the basis for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, another processor used in netbooks . “Some of our partners already have the CPU, GPU and video on one chip,” Morris said. Several netbook vendors will unveil Snapdragon-based netbooks at CES in January.

Note that you only need to do this for programs that install additional pieces when you install them; programs that can be used via drag-and-drop should run just fine from the internal drive.

Compare and contrast these two industries. How do you compare and contrast the PC industry and the developer base and the applications there with the smart phone and the connected appliance model that we see today, mobile computing environment? The reason I’m saying this is the applications and the complexity of writing an application for a sophisticated PC  operating system with files and hard drives and high speed graphics and big screens and big keyboards and a mouse and internet connectivity and file sharing and printing and all these different things, those apps are a complicated thing to do, a big investment.

Dell announced that it has updated its commercial line of Dell OptiPlex desktops with new small form factor PCs that provide business and organizations of all sizes a robust, energy efficient platform for flexible, secure and reliable desktop computing. The new Dell OptiPlex desktop systems demonstrate Dell’s commitment to customer-inspired design and solutions that scale for future growth with long-life-cycle support options and the ability to support alternative computing environments such as Dell’s Flex Computing Solutions – Virtual Remote Desktop and On-Demand Desktop Streaming environments.

In terms of mobile photography, the Dell Mini 3iX is taking it easy. The 3 Megapixel camera on board of the 3iX does not to not at all emphasize photography with the Android phone. The screen is said to be about 3.5-inch large with an average high resolution of 640×360 pixels, which is just short of a VGA screen.

Cooler Master was founded with the mission of providing the industry’s best thermal solutions. Since its establishment a decade ago, the company has remained faithful to this mission, emerging as a world leader in products and services for companies dealing with devices where heat issues must be resolved.

And, for those looking to accessorize, Dell  are also thoughtfully offer a range of extras – from earbuds to mice, sleeves and backpacks – that are designed specifically for the new Studio range and come in a series of colours to match those offered in the range.

Are you searching for a good notebook providing a host of features and facilities? If yes, then you can try for Packard Bell Easynote LJ 71-RB-023. It is a high-end notebook coming with multiple features and facilities. Therefore, buying this EasyNote LJ notebook will be a perfect choice for you.

You can turn tethering on by flicking the switch. Apple provides information on how to connect using either USB or Bluetooth, right here on the tethering screen. It’s not exhaustive, though; this tutorial will give you better guidance on getting everything set up.

What premium would you pay for a Tablet PC? Well, in order to figure the value of a tablet, you would need to be in a situation where the extra cost had a return on the investment (ROI). A tablet would have to be extra rugged, because its primary purpose would be transportability. Unlike a laptop, that is usually placed on a tabletop, not your lap, you’ll probably use a tablet while standing, which would increase the chance of dropping it by at least an order of magnitude. It’s very expensive to build extra rugged electronic devices. Think military.

Laptop diagnostics often start with a check of the power cord. Powering a laptop with a cord that is not matched exactly to that laptop can cause damage over time. Physical damage to the cord or an issue within the “brick” can cause the power cord to go bad. The first indication of a problem with a power cord may be that the  battery does not charge properly.

Also of note, apart from the Studio 15 and Studio 17’s HDMI port, is the addition of an integrated webcam which, paired with Dell’s Video Chat application, makes VoiP and IM communications a breeze and the similarities with Apple’s iChat application certainly bears some scrutiny.

It is set to be ready by early January and will promote better inter-Korean communication. South Korea started working on upgrading the existing communication equipment by installing fiber-optic cables last October. Chun Hae-sung, South Korean unification ministry spokesman said that the cable connecting operations are being conducted in the east and west sea area between the north and south. He also said that once the cable is launched, it expects more prompt and stable exchanges of information regarding crossing the border and better traffic for its people.

That being said you can also save even more energy with your laptop by also removing those devices when you are not using them. Although, they drain much less energy than optical drives they still need energy from the laptop battery to operate.

In terms of configuration, the Dell Studio XPS 13 laptop has a Core 2 Duo P7450 processors, a NVIDIA GeForce MCP79MX motherboard chipset, a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics card, a Dell 1515 Wireless N wireless card, Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth, a 4GB dual-channel DDR3 memory, a 320GB 7200 rpm hard drive, a slot-loading 8X DVD + /-RW drive, 256MB SLI technology, and pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system.

NEC Electronics Corporation is a leading supplier of USB solutions for customers worldwide and was the industry’s first company to introduce a USB 2.0 host controller and hub controller, as well as the first USB-IF-certified USB 3.0 host controller. With a USB 2.0 product line-up that includes ASSPs and ASICs, the company has shipped more than 150 million units worldwide and continues to be a leader in the development of interface technology. NEC Electronics is a USB-IF board member, which manages the compliance and certification program, branding, marketing and industry education of USB and Wireless USB technologies.

The included six-cell battery ran for 3 hours and 9 minutes in our video playback  battery drain test, which is better than the Y650, which ran for just 2 hours and 17 minutes. That’s just over our suggested minimum of 3 hours from a mainstream laptop. In our comparison charts it led the pack, including against the similar Gateway TC7804u.

The resemblance of many smartbooks to netbooks may lead consumers to assume smartbooks can handle the same computing tasks

Internet access is provided through Gigabit Ethernet or Wi-Fi 802.11b/g Draft-N, making it easy to browse websites, check email, make VOIP calls, and enjoy online entertainment, including the latest social networking platforms like facebook, twitter and YouTube. A Multi-Gesture Touchpad allows users to pinch, flick and swirl their fingers across the touchpad for more natural photo and video viewing as well as intuitive navigation of websites. The Acer Timeline Multi-Gesture Touchpad allows users to scroll, zoom in and out and flip through web pages, photos, spreadsheets and more. The TouchPad can also be disabled with a one-touch button, eliminating accidental cursor movement with palms and wrists when using an external mouse.

The Y450’s keyboard has a good classic combination of travel and click, and the textured multitouch touch pad feels more accurate than glossy pads, although that is more of a tactile psychological effect. The twin buttons below were a little mushy for us, but worked fine.

The 17-inch wide-screen LCD display offers a 1,440×900 native resolution, which is standard for a screen this size at this price. It’s a lower-end resolution, but again it’s to be expected. The bigger problem with the Asus G71GX’s screen is that off-angle viewing is terrible. Things look great when you’re sitting directly in front of the screen, but if you frequently have people viewing your screen off to the sides, they’re going to have a hard time seeing what you’re showing them.

From a design standpoint, the S12 looks like a larger brother of its smaller 2009 sibling, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2. Compact and well-proportioned, the outer matte black plastic case (white is also available) is topped with a glossy plastic lid patterned in a subtle series of varying polka-dots. It’s a smudge-collector, but attractive.

Inside, smooth matte black plastic surrounds the keyboard, and the 12-inch glossy screen is surrounded in glossy plastic. It looks professional and stylishly austere, not unlike a ThinkPad. The full keyboard feels great, and the touch pad is an improvement on the S10-2 in terms of size. It feels like a “real” laptop. It might be the most comfortable and solid keyboard we’ve experienced on a Netbook.

Perhaps the best option is to use the diagnostics tools available directly from the HD manufacture’s Web site. Each manufacture has its own custom utility for checking the status of its drives. For example, Seagate has a utility called SeaTools and Western Digital uses Data Lifeguard Diagnostic, and each has the capability to create a bootable diagnostic CD.

The resemblance of many smartbooks to netbooks may lead consumers to assume smartbooks can handle the same computing tasks. But smartbooks running Linux or its offshoots, such as Google Inc.’s Android, won’t run applications like Microsoft Word or Apple’s iTunes. Early netbooks that ran Linux ran into customer resistance and were quickly replaced with Windows-based models.

“With these new HP Minis, we’re enhancing the customer experience by adding compelling features that allow users to interact with their Mini in a fun way,” said Kevin Frost, vice president and general manager, Consumer Notebooks, Personal Systems Group, HP. “Our broad portfolio of mini companion PCs truly offers customers choices to fit every need and every personality.”

The systems are also primed for visual clarity. The 11.6-inch widescreen HD LED-backlit display is large enough to comfortably view videos, photos, documents and web pages. Featuring LED backlit technology, a 16:9 aspect ratio and Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD, the AS1410 Series delivers realistic HD pictures with crisp detail and smooth video playback.

The US Transport Security Administration late Sunday implemented new rules that are likely to have far-reaching implications for technology on planes. The security measures will ban those on international flights entering the US from having any “personal belongings” on their laps for the final hour of the flight, restricting notebooks and most other non-handheld devices. Access to carry-on bags is similarly restricted for the same period.

My Mac Mini desktop system is reliable and small, and easily able to handle my daily editorial workload

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

My Mac Mini desktop system is reliable and small, and easily able to handle my daily editorial workload. The Mac Pro tower that sits beside me for FileMaker and Photoshop duty is a steady partner in my budding video and photographic endeavors here at eWEEK. Indeed, of all the Mac systems I use, the Mac Pro would be the hardest to replace with a Windows machine because it is the processing hub for multimedia content generated in the San Francisco eWEEK Labs operation.

The outside is equipped to handle another monitor or television screen, an external mouse, and a printer. There is also an USB port for optional equipment. There is plugs for microphones, headphones or other speakers, and an audio in.

Meanwhile, Asus has unveiled a netbook with a multi-touch touchscreen; Dell  is offering Linux- and Windows XP-based Inspiron Mini 10v netbooks; and other computer vendors are expected to unveil more netbooks at the Consumer Electronics Show, to be held in Las Vegas in January 2010.

NiCad laptop batteries have a memory effect. This means that every time you do not completely use battery charge before re-charging it, the battery remembers it. This, in turn, lowers your battery’s total output in time.

My hunch is Apple will go ahead and release a product, much like its Air laptop, which has very little market under it. Steve Jobs has a habit of doing what he wants when he wants to and letting the market catch up. He could be years ahead of the rest of us, of course. It would not be the first time.

Again constantly overheating your laptop is the fastest way to shorten its laptop battery life. Your laptop’s built-in fan is not enough to cool it off. If you travel constantly, bring and use a lightweight laptop cooler to make sure that your laptop remains cool even after hours of use.

What’s interesting to me at the moment is that we are approaching certain limitations to what I consider a pocket-able device. There’s all kinds of limitations — there’s screen size, dimensions, weight, strength,  battery life, ease of use, ergonomics, keyboards — any way you slice it we are approaching physical limits to what we can achieve. Instead what happens is now we [ed: the industry] are looking at making devices bigger. Instead of approaching the limits of what is ergonomically ideal, let’s change the rules. Will people walk around with a large tablet?

“The seamless integration of PhysX into this innovative new product clearly raises the bar in mobile PC gaming,” said Manju Hegde, CEO of AGEIA. “Exciting new PhysX powered games such as Tom Clancy’s GRAW2 from Ubisoft, NetDevil’s Warmonger and Midway and Epic Games’ upcoming Unreal Tournament 3 are a perfect match for the Dell XPS 1730.”

“This signals an important milestone in the long term partnership between China Mobile and Dell,” said a China Mobile spokesperson. “We are excited for Dell to be among the first manufacturers to introduce new technology based on the OPhone platform. We look forward to working with Dell as it brings innovative new products and services to add value to our customers’ lives.”

Finally, not every ExpressCard SSD may just work “out of the box.” The FileMate SSDs definitely do, but a commenter on the Mac OS X Hints hint thread indicates that Verbatim, and possibly other brands, require a driver to work, and even then, are not bootable. Proceed at your own risk, and buy from a vendor with liberal return policies.

The new Acer Aspire 5738DG 3D notebook PC comes with helpful and easy-to-use one-touch buttons

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Mostly, I am counting on Apple finally creating the tablet that consumers will want and expecting that business use will naturally follow. Having thus opened the door, the Apple tablet might also give a boost to PC laptop tablets and other form factors.

But the big jump happened just earlier this year. The FCC finally put its foot down and mandated all TV stations switch from their great grandfather-like analog signals to bright,  crisp digital pixels. High-definition TV is now standard while standard TV is a dinosaur. Most everyone has been ecstatic at this upgrade; save for Barbara Walters and other aging personalities that show the real person with real wrinkles. All around winners here: TV make-up artists.

At 1.09 to 1.52 inches thick, the CW shows none of the obsession with thin that the rest of industry seems to be falling into like a gaggle of teenage girls. This is the Marilyn Monroe of notebooks, not the Paris Hilton. While it won’t catch any catcalls on dimensions alone, we think the sturdy feel more than justifies the extra millimeters here and there. It doesn’t quite challenge the unibody sturdiness of Apple ’s MacBooks, but a nice set of display hinges and a reinforcement below the touchpad and keyboard keep it from ever overtly flexing, unless you go out of your way to try. Weight of 5.3 pounds is reasonable for a 14-inch notebook, but not particularly impressive.

“It is very difficult to make predictions, and the people who are worst at it are the inventors themselves, the people who make the innovations,” notes Prof. Sheizaf Rafaeli, who heads the University of Haifa’s school of management. “They are experts in the specific fields they have developed but they are not experts when it comes to business models and human behavior. This gap might explain an invention’s success or failure.”

Along with its 11.6-inch HD widescreen display, the Acer Ferrari notebook features a sleek, ultraportable design, measuring about one inch thin and weighing only 3.31 pounds. The look and feel of Formula 1 racing is shown throughout the notebook’s detailed design, including the checkered palm rest extending into a comfortable full-size keyboard, the metallic LED-lit power button and yellow prancing horse emblem that perfectly complements the notebook’s red cover. Ferrari enthusiasts will also note the tire-shape grips underneath the notebook’s body, racing-inspired wallpaper and calendar, as well as a quick access key to the Ferrari website.

The new Acer Aspire 5738DG 3D notebook PC also comes with helpful and easy-to-use one-touch buttons: the Acer Backup Manager for backing-up important files and information, and the PowerSmart button for maximizing battery life. In addition, the notebook is Energy Star qualified. The Acer Aspire AS5738DG-6165 3D notebook will be available for U.S. customers with Windows 7 Home Premium this week at leading retailers.

Rather than the standard blister pack you need to destroy to get to the product inside, the Snake Scope comes in the same style of case that you get power tools and screwdriver sets in, so you can at least put it under the stairs and keep all the bits together until you need it.

While the performance difference was not enough to be a deal breaker, Netbooks are generally pokey products to begin with, and even a tiny bit of additional slowdown can be frustrating. We’d trade a little battery life for a powerful processor and a zippier overall experience (although even with the slower CPU, the custom touch apps ran smoothly most of the time).

You could choose less powerful components and lower the price all the way down to $1,799, but then you’d have a notebook  which, from the perspective of performance, isn’t much different than machines currently available from plenty of other manufacturers. The point of the M17x is that it outclasses all other laptops (and the vast majority of desktops). Start pulling out power components and you lose the machine’s raisons d’être. We don’t recommend it. The M17x really is an all or nothing proposition.

Sony’s lust for glittery automotive-style finishes manifests itself yet again in the CW

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Apple has been touting its environmental friendliness for the last few years, and company officials note that the Apple  MacBook is free of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), polyvinyl chloride (PVCs) and mercury; uses an arsenic-free display; is made of recyclable polycarbonate and comes in packaging that’s 20% smaller than before. The MacBook meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements and has been rated EPEAT Gold. In other words, you can buy a MacBook with a good green-technology conscience.

As it aids the speakers, the notebook’s sheer size seems to benefit its Wi-Fi reception by way of a longer internal antenna. Not only did it pull down unshakably strong signal from the close by networks we’re used to, it also turned up faraway fringe networks that other laptops haven’t even put on radar.

The box for the Vaio P contains the notebook itself, a tiny power adapter with a respectably long cord, and the aforementioned display/Ethernet adapter brick. For a notebook this small and pricy, with virtually no accessory aftermarket, it’s amazing Sony  didn’t have the forethought to include a case for protection. Since it’s far too small for a conventional notebook case, and will probably end up in a backpack or purse, it seems like this would be an obvious addition. Even Asus includes them with all of its Eee netbooks.

But while the VAIO is a fine accomplishment in minimal, functional industrial design, it poses some problems for those who might want to haul it around with them. Its 1.5-inch thickness and 11.4-inch depth are perfectly manageable, but few laptop bags will be able to accommodate the AW’s enormous 17.2-inch width. (Most laptop carriers are designed to accommodate machines no wider than about 16-inches—the standard width of a notebook with a 17-inch screen). Some people may also take issue with the AW’s 8.8-pounds of mass, which includes its laptop battery but not its weighty power brick.

Apple may pump out iPod Nanos in every shade of the rainbow, but MacBook buyers get just one choice: gloss white. It hides fingerprints with ease, but it also tends to show off little bits of dirt and lint. And as anyone who has ever trekked along with a Nalgene bottle knows, polycarbonate loves to collect scratches.

Sony’s lust for glittery automotive-style finishes manifests itself yet again in the CW, which comes in no shortage of colors with pomped-up names like Royal Indigo and Fiery Red. Although they collect smudges and fingerprints the same way the hood of a BMW might if you managed to build a keyboard into it, we have to admit we fell for the deep luster and shine. Both the lid and palm rest come swathed in your finish of choice, with matte black overtaking the rest of the chassis.

Machines sporting Arm chips are also likely to be thinner as they will not need the heat sinks demanded by processors used in desktops.Mr Drew said deals Arm has signed with Adobe will help ensure that future devices will be able to use the software maker’s familiar video, audio and image editing tools.

While playing 3D games, the display works well, although you might want to turn the brightness level up (video look darker viewed though the sunglass-like 3D specs). However, when not using the Nvidia 3D technology the screen’s low resolution is noticeable, and it detracts from general Web surfing and media playback.

Google will soon introduce a smartbook that is expected to cost much less than traditional netbooks, rely on a cloud computing model, and be heavily based on consuming Internet content.  The device will run Google’s own streamlined operating system, Chrome OS.  The recently leaked specs of the the Google machine are impressive: 64 GB SSD, 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA Tegra 2 Chipset/GPU, and a possibly priced entry unit that comes in at under $200.

What are Lithium Polymer Batteries?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Lithium polymer batteries are thin, rectangular, lightweight batteries used in many electronic items such as notebooks, or laptops, computers and cell phones. “LiPo” and “LiPoly” are common short names for lithium polymer batteries. Lithium polymer batteries are considered to be a safer alternative to lithium ion batteries.

As with most all batteries, LiPoly batteries will explode if overcharged, but because they contain polymer gel, LiPoly batteries will not burst into flames if crushed like lithium ion batteries are prone to do. The reason for the difference in flammability reactions between the two types of batteries is the way the lithium is suspended in the batteries. In lithium ion batteries, the lithium ions are suspended by organic solvents that are flammable. In lithium polymer batteries, the lithium is contained in a polymer gel that is not easily flammable.

Lithium ion batteries have lithium tightly contained within them. They are powerful batteries and if a short occurs inside them, it can lead to flames. Cylindrical in shape, lithium ion batteries look more like a larger version of AA batteries rather than the narrow, flat, lithium polymer batteries. Lithium polymer batteries are not as prone to flammability as lithium ion batteries are.

Lithium polymer batteries cost more than lithium ion batteries and are quicker to lose their capacity. Yet, LiPoly batteries are lighter in weight, making them ideal as a notebook, or laptop, computer battery, as well as a battery for cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), camcorders, hearing aids and digital cameras. The reason lithium polymer batteries are so lightweight is that the polymer gel packs fit into the spaces within the battery and eliminate the need for metal casing to enclose the

Both lithium ion and LiPoly batteries are available in rechargeable versions. Zinc-based batteries are another alternative to lithium ion batteries as they are long lasting, not easily flammable and are more environmentally friendly than lithium ion batteries. However, lithium is a popular battery choice as lithium gives the biggest amount of electric energy possible in energy per unit weight of all solid elements.

How to extend your Dell Inspiron E1505 Laptop Battery life?

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Laptop battery just seems to be happy at the moment. We believe that our laptops. We want all our batteries as much as possible, and how we can extend batteries.I laptop, you will find some useful suggestions of items to be done.

The first:  memory – When first got my laptop, my friend, the battery is fully charged before the leak. Grounds were associated with the idea of the memory effect. so that the battery is fully charged, then the maximum flow, it seems that you are able to complete the battery. Otherwise, if you made the transition Inspiron E1505 maximum load capacity of the battery, the battery will face as a half-point gap, thus cutting your battery capacity in half. The good news is the laptop batteries now have a safety circuit in a position to reach the battery is not the point of no return will be provided. T not the security code infallible, of course, except if your battery is completely empty for a few days, usually the protection circuits.

The second: Battery Calibrating – There are benefits paid in full at regular intervals, the battery may be particularly important. If you notice your original battery meter is always wrong, maybe it’s time for some battery calibration. Keeping battery is completely discharged, which will calibrate the battery is new, for more accurate measurement of battery life. This should be done when all 30 charges, or if you notice any signs of battery is off.

The Third: The effect of heat – another enemy of battery life is the heat. Leaving your laptop online and run for a year, should expect the battery capacity Inspiron E1505, max that somewhere between 60% and 80% of original capacity. That is why people use laptops to replace desktop significantly reduces battery life subject to capacity after a year of use. This problem can be solved by removing the battery and a power source. Now, you may want to check in advance with your manufacturer to check the safety issues, some manufacturers have problems such as humidity and dust collection referred to in the case of the battery.

The fourth, the battery storage – If you have decided on the battery for a long time, you will want to have the charge level of 40%, and the battery in the refrigerator (not freezer). Save the battery charged to 100% is cause unnecessary stress and internal corrosion. On the other hand, if the tax is too low, the battery Inspiron E1505 become permanently unusable, because the discharge of the battery. For this reason, other than the manufacturers recommend charging your batteries at 40% instead of the two extremes.
