There is no optical drive in the U350, much like in other thin-and-lights such as the Acer(Acer Aspire One 8.9″ battery) Timeline series and the MSI X340. In that sense, the U350 is a closer cousin to the MacBook Air, although a bit thicker (the U350 is 1 inch tall). At first glance, the U350 looks thick enough to have handled an optical drive, but the lightweight feel without it is refreshing.

I should add that the 2100 ran nice and quiet, but a little hot. I found that with prolonged use, the lower-left quadrant warmed up a bit. The effect wasn’t anything to complain about, but I did notice it.

Does the Dell(Dell Inspiron 6000 battery) Latitude 2100 jump to the head of its class? Well, it’s certainly the most mature (and the beefiest) take on a netbook in recent memory. And, yeah, if you can look past the price it’s a good option for your young scholar–and then when he or she brings it home at the end of the day, maybe Dad can borrow it to tinker in an Ubuntu partition. That’s assuming you don’t mind that kind of cost for what’s billed as a child’s computer. Make the Latitude 2100 a little less boxy and kid-oriented, and I’d consider using this touchscreen PC myself.

The touch pad, too, is textured, but in its case, it’s a grid of raised dots. The feel is an acquired taste. For the first hour we had the NW125, the touch pad felt too rough, as if we were moving the cursor by dragging a finger over a piece of sandpaper. After a short time, we began to like the feel it provides–the polar opposite of the overly glossy touch pads found on HP( HP 2133 Battery) Pavilions–and found it to be very responsive. The touch pad also features wide vertical and horizontal scroll regions along its right and bottom edges, respectively. The mouse buttons border on being clacky, but they’re far from egregious offenders in this regard.

I’ve reformatted the notebook. I’ve tried multiple different drivers from laptopvideo2go (to wit: they either never installed or they blue-screened the computer on boot) and had to stick with HP(Pavilion dv 2133 battery)’s for the 7150M. The sad fact is that Aero Glass runs horribly on the 7150M. Moving windows and scrolling within them is just plain choppy, and despite all my best efforts I cannot get them to render well. While most of you probably won’t care, I’m too used to the silky smooth performance of Vista on my desktop. The pathetic performance of Aero Glass on the GeForce 7150M is damning and more than that, just plain inexcusable. I don’t know if I should blame nVidia or Microsoft, but it’s pathetic.

Included is a built-in 8X DVD-RW optical drive manufactured jointly by Samsung and Toshiba. This drive is capable of burning & reading DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, Latitude D600 Battery ,DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R/RW discs. Noise is kept to a drowned hum in most circumstances but can get noisy once it hits max speed. Testing the drive yielded no problems.

3DMark 2003 build 3.6.0 measures DX9 performance through a series of 3D game based sound, graphics, and CPU tests. Resolution was set to 1024×768 with all default settings.

3DMark2005 build 1.2.0 is a graphics intensive benchmark best suited for the latest generation of DirectX 9.0 graphics cards. It combines high quality 3D tests, CPU tests, and is the first benchmark to require Pixel Shader 2.0 support, making this a highly stressful 3D benchmark.

“Free” netbooks sold in cell phone-like plans could appeal to businessIn keeping with the theme of netbooks as Internet-enabled communications devices, vendors have begun experimenting with new pricing models that could turn the PC market on its head. Because data communications requires data connectivity, netbook Toshiba Satellite A20-S103 battery manufacturers and mobile data carriers have been exploring partnerships that could see the consumer cost of netbooks effectively drop to zero. The carriers would subsidize all or much of the netbooks’ cost through monthly connectivity charges, as they do with cell phones. With netbook prices approaching the $200 range, it’s easy to envision them doing the same for this new class of devices.

The keyboard is similar to other Lenovo offerings: the tapered keys have a comfortable feel but are a little softer than those on a ThinkPad. The touch pad has a tactile friction that makes multitouch easy; it’s covered with a finer grain than Lenovo’s more heavily dimpled IdeaPad Y pads. The touch pad buttons, while large, are soft to the point of being mushy. While they worked fine, not having a click was distracting. Above the keyboard are just a few dedicated buttons: one for volume mute, and one for instant access to Lenovo(ThinkPad X200 Tablet series battery)’s OneKey data backup and recovery software. Volume and screen brightness are controlled through a function button-arrow key combination.

Fade and washout were imminent and it was sometimes hard to gather a wider range for viewing the laptop HP Pavilion ZD7040US battery when it was on my lap, but side to side viewing was rather well. I couldn’t get the lighting to work on those pictures, so I guess you’ll just have to trust me.

Where Asus crams in a separate number pad on its 15.6-inch UX50V laptop, Sony wisely leaves it off on the Vaio NW125. As a result, the keyboard is centered beneath the display and feels very roomy. The Chiclet-style keys don’t offer the supple feel of the Dell(Dell Vostro 1500 battery ) Studio S1440, but they offer good travel with nary a key shortened. Despite its obvious entertainment appeal, the Vaio NW125 doesn’t feature a strip of media control keys; you’ll need to use the F keys to pause, fast forward, rewind, and control the volume. In addition to the power button, only three other buttons reside above the keyboard: a mute button, a handy Web button opens your default browser, and a third that turns the display off and on.

And unfortunately, this gets into the real meat of the problem with this notebook and why I wouldn’t recommend it for most consumers: unless you reformat the computer – which most consumers don’t even know how to do – you’re in for a world of pain. Simply put, the notebook as it ships is ungodly, dog slow. Even with the RAM upgrade, it’s horribly slow and unresponsive.

The laptop comes with a standard 6-cell battery rated at 4800mAh. The PA3284U-1BAS battery protrudes slightly from the back of the machine.

Unlike the behemoth of a power supply that comes with the XBOX360, the ASUS(Asus A3500L battery ) power brick is small making it easy to place into the bag or out of the way when connected to the laptop. Unfortunately, it does not come with a Velcro strap to organize the lengthy power cables.

PCMark 2005 Advanced build 1.1.0 is the latest update to Futuremark’s popular overall system benchmarking program. Hewlett-Packard is striving hard to enhance its position as one of the leading notebook manufacturers

The IdeaPad U350’s glossy 13.3-inch 16:9 LED screen has a resolution of 1,366×768, absolutely standard for this size. Icons and text looked sharp, and the colors and brightness generally looked very good when watching movies and video. The tucked-out-of-sight internal speakers are also amazingly loud, much louder than we’d expect for a machine this size. A built-in Webcam and microphone above the screen were also clear and crisp during video teleconferencing.

Even though the M305 is a 14.1′ unit, it feels a bit chunky. Although we like the robust feel, it could definitely shave off some plastic feel to make this unit a little more classy. Weight rang up to about 5 and a quarter pounds whilst the dimensions of the unit are 13.2 x 9.53 x 1.29. At nearly 1 and a half inches, the laptop PA3331U-1BAS seems thick – most notable again in the LCD bezel.

The 15.5-inch screen features a cinematic 16:9 aspect ratio and a 1,366×768-pixel native resolution, making it a perfect fit for HD video (although it’s not a full 1080p display). The screen has a glossy coating to spiff up the appearance of movies and photos, and while it does help make colors pop and movement look smoother, it might be the least-glossy glossy screen we’ve seen, so glare and reflections are not a problem. Also not a problem: the integrated speakers, which reach a respectable level and max volume.

I know all the bloatware that comes with a notebook is what knocks the price down, but in the process it can render a unit borderline unusable, and that seems to be the case here. If you’re a bit more of a do-it-yourselfer like me, or you know someone like that, you can probably comfortably buy the notebook, reformat it, and unlock its true performance. But if you don’t know what you’re doing, this thing’s gonna be a dead end for you.

The ASUS(Asus Eee PC 8G battery) comes with its own power management software (Power4Gear) to regulate CPU performance under various environments. There are 8 different settings. The Battery Saving profile allows you to maximize the BTP-43D1 battery to its fullest by powering down the CPU to 25% and lowering the screen brightness. For more processor intensive tasks such as DVD playback or graphic imaging, it’s best to switch to the Super Performance setting. Gamers will be happy to know that there is a dedicated Gaming profile. While I haven’t noticed much difference in performance under different system profiles, I find that leaving the laptop in the High Performance setting is fine for most tasks as the Core Duo processor seems to power down when necessary anyway. And you can always switch to Windows’ default management system if you’re feeling unconvinced.

Hewlett-Packard is striving hard to enhance its position as one of the leading notebook manufacturers, and the dv5000z represents a strong showing. The choice of AMDs Turion 64 processor was an excellent move in several ways. It offers fast system performance, respectable HP Pavilion ZT1114-F3415HG battery life (partially thanks to the large capacity battery), and runs extremely cool & quiet. Overall, all of the features offered from this machine perform exceedingly well at a great price.

We ran the F6Ve through several Latitude D600 battery tests in an attempt to best simulate “average” use. The software used to accomplish this was Battery Eater 05.

Noise-wise, the F6Ve was pretty exceptional. I rarely heard the fans kick on for any extended period of time under real world use. In terms of heat output, I’d say it was average, with a decent amount being exhausted out of the vent on the left side. During the Crysis benchmark, the most hot air was pouring out, and the fan was at its noisiest, but that was to be expected.

The ASUS comes bundled with Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 and a 90-day trial edition of Norton Anti-virus

The port assortment on the IdeaPad U350 is solid and functional, and while it doesn’t have an ExpressCard slot, it does throw in an HDMI-out and an SD card slot. Internally, the IdeaPad U350 has both 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so it doesn’t lack for wireless–although 3G isn’t really an option without buying a USB modem.

Our unit came configured with a 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100, a 250 gb Sata 5400 drive, 3gb of RAM, IBM ThinkPad A21 battery, and an Intel X3100 with shared memory. Upgrading looks slim to none with no obvious improvements unless you went with more RAM or a faster hard drive – but even then the RAM woulnd’t be used by the 32bit Windows Vista Home Premium operating system. And at this price point, why bother.

You’ll find a useful assortment of ports and connections on the NW125. HDMI is featured, for outputting video to an HDTV, as is VGA for connecting to older computer monitors. FireWire (i.Link in Sony’s parlance) makes the cut, joining a trio of USB 2.0 ports and an eSATA port.

And no, the “tune up” the guy in the store tries to sell you is worthless. You need a straight up clean install of Windows Vista with none of the bloatware that comes with the notebook PA3307U-1BAS battery.

Oh, and the hard drive runs well. Seriously, what did you expect? It’s a 5400rpm notebook hard drive, these things are standard these days. It’s just fine for your needs. It stores your files and it lets you access them.

The ASUS(Asus Eee PC 900 battery ) comes bundled with Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 and a 90-day trial edition of Norton Anti-virus. Upon startup, you’ll be presented with a vast number of utilities that will preoccupy a portion of the taskbar. ASUS felt that the laptop could be optimized completely with their own set of utilities preinstalled. They seem to add bloat more than anything else, but fortunately you can easily uninstall the software with ease.

Since the integrated Radeon Xpress 200M falls behind in 3D performance and there is no discrete graphics option, this wont be a system for gamers. Despite this fact, the Radeon Xpress 200M offers good system performance, Windows Vista compatibility,HP Pavilion ZD7000 battery, low power consumption, and lowers the overall cost of the unit; making it the perfect choice for the dv5000z. We wouldnt mind seeing a discrete graphics option thrown in there, but we realize it would cost more to even have that as a choice and thus reduce the incredible value in this machine.

The F6Ve was portable and easy to carry or fit in a bag. The keyboard was okay to type on for average periods of time, but any long missives you may need to write should be saved for your desktop machine.

I used the F6Ve mostly for web browsing, and watching videos on Hulu and Youtube. For these activities, the F6Ve was a shining star. As mentioned earlier, video looks remarkably good, even at crappy Youtube resolution, and the F6Ve was great for getting my daily fix of gadget blogs. If you notice though, Sony VAIO PCG-FR130 battery, these were all activities that didn’t require a great deal of mouse usage, so I suppose these results may be a bit skewed because they don’t really exploit the laptop’s biggest weakness, which is the touchpad and mouse buttons.

On the whole, the Asus F6Ve was a pretty nice notebook

The IdeaPad U350 is available in several configurations, most with the Pentium U2700 processor we reviewed, although a slightly faster Core 2 Solo U3500 model is also available for the same $749 price on Lenovo’s site (in which case, we recommend the upgrade). RAM is upgradable to 4GB, while the hard-drive capacities go up to 320GB or as low as 250GB.

This laptop has one feature that sets it apart from most out there – and that is Toshiba(Toshiba Satellite A70-S2362 battery)’s newest ‘innovation’ for its ‘Sleep and Charge’ USB ports. You can now charge most USB devices with a USB cable, whether the laptop is on, off, or in standby mode. I can see a use for it on the road when I want to charge multiple devices at once with only one outlet, but other than that – it’s more of a novelty.

As a member of Best Buy’s Next Class program, the Sony(Sony VAIO PCG-FR130 battery) Vaio VGN-NW125J/T (a configuration exclusive to the retail store) goes beyond just software trials and actually offers a useful software bundle. Or so claims Best Buy on its Web site. Next Class systems we recently reviewed–the Dell Studio S1440-022B and the HP Pavilion dv4-1465dx–included CDs (with activation codes) of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 and Norton Internet Security 2009. Our Vaio NS125 test system included neither. We would have chalked this up to us receiving an early production system, but multiple customer comments on Best Buy’s Web site report missing CDs. Be sure to look in the box for both Office and Norton CDs should you decide to purchase the Vaio NW125J/T.

The keyboard and touchpad of the dv2610us are, much like the rest of HP(Pavilion dv 2133 Battery)’s lineup, fantastic. The keyboard is a joy to use, and the touchpad is very smooth and comfortable. It’s a little smallish, but given the size of the notebook, that’s livable.

On the whole, the Asus F6Ve was a pretty nice notebook. The Intel Core 2 Duo T9550, 4GB DDR2-800 RAM, and ATI.Mobility Radeon HD 4570 made for a nice package, especially considering it currently retails for $1199 at Newegg. That’s a lot of hardware bang for the buck. But, like I mentioned earlier, don’t even think about this laptop without getting the upgraded Latitude D600 battery.

The keyboard on my unit does seem to have a little trouble with being too clicky toward the bottom right, feeling like it’s catching on something a little, but other than that it’s quite nice to use.

For example, I found ASUS(Asus Eee PC 701 battery)’ wireless connectivity utility more of a hassle to deal with in connecting to my wireless network. It would constantly nag on me requesting if I wanted to connect to a wireless network, yet it had trouble connecting. Out of frustration I ended up switching to Windows’ default wireless connection wizard and everything worked fine.

Just about anybody will appreciate the ability to watch pre-recorded television shows out and about, thanks to the optional ExpressCard TV tuner. Adding Windows Media Center 2005 with remote control and LightScribe in addition to the HP(HP Presario B1952TU battery) QuickPlay and built-in Altec Lansing speakers certainly gives this model an edge over other multimedia laptops in the same class.

Now what I’ve always loved about HP’s notebooks

Monday, August 31st, 2009

While we absolutely love the U350’s design, it must be noted that, against other CULV thin-and-lights out there, it wasn’t exactly a barn-burner. In fact, in our multimedia multitasking, Photoshop, and iTunes tests, it came in last. That’s because many of these laptops had either Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Solo regular or ultralow-voltage processors, while the IdeaPad U350 has a single-core Pentium U2700 ultralow-voltage processor (ULV). The Pentium U2700 is still far better than the Atom processor that runs in nearly all Netbooks Aspire 3000 battery, and is perfectly good for basic office applications, Web browsing, video streaming, and casual games, and seemed to run Vista with no problems. We just wouldn’t advise any large-scale multitasking work using it.

The M305 does include a very decent pair of harmon/kardon speakers. Even though they are smaller, they are by no means useless and offer a decent audio experience. Bass sucked, and some high notes were distorted a bit, but otherwise they offered a nice experience whilst I ran the DVD test.

On CNET Labs application benchmarks, the NW125 kept pace with other systems that feature the same configuration: Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, 4GB of memory, a 5,400rpm hard drive,FPCBP155 Battery , and integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics. It provides more than enough muscle for general mainstream use, including heavy multitasking, and should be able to handle any nongaming task you throw at it.

Now what I’ve always loved about HP(HP Pavilion XZ Series battery)’s notebooks is the inclusion of a touchpad disable button just above the touchpad itself. This little toggle is really a great inclusion, and is much better than a Function and F-key combo toggle. The one on my notebook, however, is stuck in a little bit, and I have to push it with my fingernail. I checked this against the ones in stores and they were all a bit recessed like mine, though not quite as difficult.

The ASUS W7J was set to run at full performance by setting the power scheme set to ‘Home/Office Desk’ with the AC plugged in, meaning that the CPU will not underclock while running the tests. For the battery performance test, the power scheme was set to ‘Portable/Laptop’. This activates Intel’s Enhanced Speedstep technology, which lowers CPU speed when not needed, thus increasing Latitude D600  battery life. Screen brightness and audio were both set to 50%, Bluetooth was disabled and Wi-Fi were turned on. Each test was repeated 3 times to ensure accuracy. Before each test was run, the laptop was rebooted and its hard drive defragmented.

With all these features, our high-end model was priced around a very modest $1499, but you can tweak the configuration for an even better deal. The dv5000z is a very good value for a multimedia/general purpose laptop, considering the Toshiba(Toshiba Satellite A70-S2362 battery) Qosmio G25 costs almost $600 more. Top notch multimedia features, powerful performance and a reasonable price make the Pavilion dv5000z a no brainer recommendation for the mainstream home user. We proudly honor it.

There’s one thing that would stop me from unconditionally recommending this laptop… and that is the abysmal mouse/trackpad. It just wasn’t responsive enough, and I found myself more often than not fighting it just to get it to go where I wanted. The mouse buttons were very stiff and non-responsive, and while you could solve the whole problem by plugging in a USB mouse, that negates the notion of a truly “mobile” computer, which is unfortunate, considering everything else this laptop has going for it.

Something that is missing however, is that this model does NOT come with an internal Bluetooth device

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Even though its performance is lower than expected, so is its price. At $749, it’s more than half the price of a Dell(Dell Inspiron 1520 battery) Adamo, MacBook Air, or ThinkPad T400s. Of course, the IdeaPad U350’s real competitors are the budget-range MSI X340 ($799 as originally reviewed) and Acer Aspire 3810T ($899), but it’s also cheaper than either of those.

The M305 does feature wireless A/b/g/ and also houses a 1.3m effective webcam at the top of the LCD. This is becoming a pretty standard feature now, but it’s still nice to see it at this price point.

Something that is missing however, is that this model does NOT come with an internal Bluetooth device. Something that I feel is sort of a skimp on Toshibas(Satellite A70-S2362 battery) end, being classified more to the ultramobile, I think this should and could easily be remedied, but it’s something to note.

The Vaio NW125 uses a standard six-cell battery and lasted 2 hours, 49 minutes on CNET Labs’ demanding Sony VAIO PCG-FR130  battery drain test. In anecdotal testing, with the laptop running under typical usage scenario, we didn’t surpass the 3-hour mark. That’s fairly disappointing, when you consider smaller laptops at or near the NW125’s price use extended-cell batteries, which greatly lengthen the time you can spend away from a wall outlet.

Your mileage may vary and it’s a minor thing in the grand scheme of things anyhow. The fact that the button exists at all is a great touch on HP(HP Compaq Presario B1903TU battery)’s part.

Left side: S-Video, VGA, HP( HP Pavilion XZ Series Battery) Expansion Port 3 connector, Ethernet, USB port that might as well just say “flash drive goes here,” a very welcome FireWire port, ExpressCard slot used to house media remote, and a 5-in-1 flash memory reader supporting SD, MMC, Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO, and xD card.

Internet Content Creation: In this scenario, the content creator creates a product related website targeting a broadband and narrowband audience. The user first renders a 3D model to a bitmap, while preparing web pages using a web site publishing tool. The user opens a video editing package, creates a movie from several raw input movie cuts and sound cuts and starts exporting it.

While waiting on this operation, the user imports the rendered image into an image-processing package; modifies it and saves the results. Back in the 3D modeling software, the user modifies a 3D model and exports it to a vector-graphics format. Once the movie is assembled, the user edits it and creates special effects using one of the modified images as input. The user extracts content from an archive.

Meanwhile, he uses an animation creation tool to open the exported 3D vector graphics file. He modifies it by including other pictures and optimizes it for faster animation. The final movie with the special effects is then compressed in a format that can be broadcast over broadband Internet. The web site is given the final touches and the system is scanned for viruses.

The IdeaPad U350’s four-cell battery lasted 2 hours and 59 minutes in our video drain IBM ThinkPad A21 battery test, which is lower than we’d like for a low-voltage laptop. While the MSI X340 and Dell Adamo actually had worse battery life than this, the Acer Aspire 3810T achieves nearly double that on its included battery. Here at laptop logic, we try to provide a consistent format for testing each unit. But sometimes, life throws some quirks at you and you have to provide what you have, with what you have.

You can read more about our testing methodology . And in order for most these tests to run smoothly, you have to uninstall all the ‘bloatware’ that comes with a PC to make sure that you aren’t getting conflicts (and even though we do this a lot, sometimes we still DO get conflicts). It’s good to note, that the M305 came with it’s fair share of ‘partnered software’ – I’m sure to keep the price down on this line-up, but it was noted that we do wish to opt for laptops Toshiba Satego P100-10F battery WITHOUT all the trial office, skype, vongo stuff out there. Moving on…

Though purchased at retail stores, Sony(VAIO PCG-TR1 battery)’s basic one-year parts-and-labor warranty applies to the Vaio NW125. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line and an online knowledge base. Also, driver downloads for this model can be found at Sony’s support Web site.

The left side of the notebook is pretty much a “who’s who” of useful ports … and HP(HP Pavilion dv8000t battery )’s expansion port connector, which I’m sure will be handy for the accessorizing user or the user who will be using this as their only computer.

Office Productivity : In this scenario, the office productivity user creates a marketing presentation and supporting documents for a new product. The user receives email containing a collection of documents in a compressed file. The user reviews his email and updates his calendar while a virus checking software scans the system. The corporate web site is viewed and the user begins creating the collateral documents. The user also accesses a database and runs some queries.

A collection of documents are compressed. The queries’ results are imported into a spreadsheet and used to generate graphical charts. The user then transcribes a document.. Since about early April of this year, PCmark and 3dmark went their courses of being updated. That being said, we’ve encountered some funky conflicts with this program, mixed with our Worldbench program. It’s also happening with the Asus(Asus Eee PC 701 battery ) M70 we’re testing as well – but we did get some runs done although we had to use the older versions of 3dmark. Also note, that this is only our second posting with PCmark Vantage edition, so our only reference was the TX2000 we just recently reviewed.

The two headphone jacks have always been a nice touch, and the wireless switch uses an appealing blue LED. Note that there’s no latch for the lid; I’ve come to really appreciate latchless notebooks PA3356U-1BAS battery and it’s something that works well here.

The Toshiba(Toshiba Satellite A20-S103 battery) M305 gathered some decent productivity numbers – this is no powerhouse by any means, but the upgraded PCmark program does task the processor so it does fall into line with other similar spec units. The unit performed well, especially with the 3gb of RAM and a decently capable T8100, but it did fall behind the Tx2000 we just recently reviewed powered by the Turion x2 processor.

Wireless connectivity is handled by the standard Broadcom 802.11b/g wireless adaptor. It does its job, but it’s not terribly remarkable. The notebook also includes built-in Bluetooth, which feels like it’s living a toggle-free lifestyle since the only way to disable it is abstracted through a bunch of different settings in HP(HP Pavilion dv 2133 battery)’s Wireless Manager, which doesn’t even have a start menu entry and pretty much only pops up when it feels like it.

The ASUS W7J was set to run at full performance by setting the power scheme set to ‘Home/Office Desk’ with the AC plugged in, meaning that the CPU will not underclock while running the tests.
